These group of fans raised roughly about 5,000,000 won (approximately $5,700 New Zealand dollars) and donated to a local convenient store located in Incheon. It is said that SNSD fans who donated and participate during each members birthdays, took into consideration of Hyo-Yeon's hometown and decided to donate their funds there. The convenient store sales the basic needs of everyday life.
Park Jong-Suk who runs the convenient store states that "funds made from SNSD fans will be able to help around 300 families for six months." Park also stated that as the national holiday Chuseok (This is the Korean version of Thanks Giving for the harvest) approaches, he thanked SNSD fans where a lot families will benefit from their donations.
Not only did the fans just collected and donated the funds, but the local fans in their own will carried out community service roles around Incheon. They all dispersed to care take the elderly who live alone, and also advertised posters of Hyo-Yeon's birthday.
I have witnessed the lengths Korean fans a capable of, but never seen such fans who will take their time and to do something good for the community just for a day. I presume that majority of these fans who participated are teenagers and still find the time to organise an event that needed global participation in order for it to work is amazing.
Unlike past fans who would use the money to buy expensive gifts to their overly well paid stars, I believe that SNSD fans who collectively collaborate together and contribute to society is something that is very very rarely seen in Korea and may see a change of fan behaviour in the future.
